PROFESSIONALS AGAINST THE WAR

MISSION:

To promote a more accurate understanding of the true causes of the Iraq War and a humane resolution to the conflict, which will bring peace to both the Iraqi and American peoples.

WHY SUCH A GROUP?

We need such a group, because for the past seven years our country has given up the principle of truth in politics for the principle of deceit.  The leaders of the Republican Party (Bush, Cheney, Powell, Rice, Frist, Delay, and Hastert) have consistently lied to the American public and the world regarding the reasons for and the conduct of this war.  The Democrats, however, have not been much better.   They have for the most part gone willingly along with the Republicans.  One only needs to be reminded that both John Kerry and John Edwards (the ’04 standard bearers), Dick Gephardt (the House minority leader at the time), Tom Daschle (the Senate’s top Democrat and Majority Leader at the time) and Hillary Clinton (the ’08 frontrunner), all voted for the Iraq war resolution.  What about the media channels?  They have not been better.  During the run-up to the war, when ample evidence existed that Iraq was not a security threat and did not possess WMDs (e.g. from former U.N. Chief Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter), the media left the administration’s statements regarding the Iraqi threat virtually unchallenged.  One only needs to recall the allegedly liberal New York Times publishing article after article describing the danger of Iraq’s WMDs.  The dearth of true investigative, questioning journalism ran the gamut from the right-leaning FOX News to the left-leaning New York Times.  So if we can’t trust the Republicans, the Democrats, nor the news media, what are we to do?  This is why we feel compelled to launch such a group.

Running Commentary

7/8/07 - Support for the war is continuing to erode, even among Republicans.  This week, Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) broke ranks with the administration and called for a change of course in Iraq.  Added with the recent defections of Republican Senators Warner, Lugar, and Voinovich, this means a super majority is building in the Senate with the potential to override a future W veto on Iraq.  Be sure to follow the Senate debate in the next weeks, as various proposals (including revisiting war authorization) are discussed.

6/10/07 - Did you catch the recent debates?  We have a few thoughts to share.

Republican debate:  As Paul Krugman (NY Times columnist) pointed out, Mitt Romney stated that the Iraq war could have only been avoided if Saddam Hussein had opened up the country to International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors.  As the Bush administration has so often done, this is an attempt to rewrite history.  Let us remember that the person who pushed the IAEA inspectors out of Iraq was, in fact, George Bush.  Inspections were in full swing in the months leading up to the war.   On the positive side, when Rep. Ron Paul was asked for the most pressing moral issue in the United States right now, he replied as follows:  "I think it is the acceptance just recently that we now promote preemptive war. I do not believe that’s part of the American tradition."  Bravo!!!

Democratic debate:  The big headline from the Democratic debate was that Mr. Edwards accused Ms. Clinton and Mr. Obama of a lack of leadership for delaying their "No" votes on the war funding resolution until the last possible moment - i.e. after it was already certain that the resolution would pass.  Obama retorted that he had opposed the war from the start, unlike Edwards.  Out of the current "big 3," Obama is, in fact, the only one with any credibility on the war issue.   Mr. Edwards and Ms. Clinton both voted for the initial War Authorization resolution and have only now that it is popular, begun to paint themselves as war opponents.

5/25/07 - By overwhelming majorities, both the Senate (80-14) and House (280-114) voted to continue funding the Iraq war through September, 30 2007, without a withdrawal timetable.  This is just one more indication of the bipartisan support for this war effort, since its inception.

11/15/06 - The Democrats' win in Congress is a step in the right direction.  However, much more work remains to be done to end this illegal war.  See our Contact Us page to get involved!

10/11/06 - Let the truth be KNOWN - the Iraq war has resulted in the deaths of more than 650,000 Iraqi civilians, making it one of the great killing fields in history!    These are the conclusions of a respected Johns Hopkins School of Public Health study.  See the following link:  The Human Cost of the War in Iraq.

9/23/06 - It turns out the Iraq war actually increased the terrorism danger!  This is now the official position of the US spy agencies, detailed in the National Intelligence Estimate.  Read the story at NYT.com

6/12/06 - In the town of Haditha, US soldiers massacred 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians, including women and children.  The Haditha massacre, together with the Abu Ghraib prison tortures, show the extent to which US policy has lost its moral underpinnings.  These incidents are the logical outcome of administration policies, such as the willful decision to violate Geneva Convention rules for Guantanamo detainees.  This lack of regard for international law at the top opens the floodgates for violations at all levels.

5/19/06 - Condie Rice, the current U.S. Secretary of State, is scheduled to speak at Boston College in Newton, Massachusetts at 10:00 a.m. on 5/22/06.  This is a great opportunity to come out and protest against the war.  The most effective protest will likely be to take a Christian slant, as B.C. is a Jesuit school.  If interested in joining us, please  Contact Us.
